
Claim Counsel – D&O/Professional Liability

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama.
• Analyze and interpret insurance policies, endorsements, and relevant statutes to assess coverage, exclusions, and obligations.
• Prepare and distribute coverage position letters, including reservations of rights and denial letters, ensuring clarity and adherence to legal and regulatory standards.
• Assess and provide feedback on coverage forms and policy language as requested by carriers.
• Manage and conduct intricate claims investigations, including collecting evidence, reviewing reports, and evaluating liability and damages.
• Formulate and execute strategic plans for claim resolution, including supervising litigation when necessary.
• Offer carriers independent evaluations of claims based on investigation findings, experience, and insights from external experts and counsel.
• Assess exposure and make settlement suggestions, including establishing and managing reserves within carrier guidelines.
• Negotiate settlements within established authority limits, balancing legal risks, financial exposure, and business objectives.
• Engage in mediations and settlement conferences as needed.
• Ensure all claims handling adheres to Department of Insurance regulations and internal protocols.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation in the claims management system, including coverage analyses and strategic recommendations.
• Act as a trusted advisor to internal teams and carriers on coverage and complex claims matters.
• Serve as the key resource for coverage and strategy in interactions with external counsel, policyholders, and other stakeholders.
• Juris Doctor (JD) with an active bar membership in good standing, **or**
• 7–10+ years of senior-level experience managing complex liability claims.
• Adjusters licenses.
• Proven expertise in insurance coverage analysis and policy interpretation.
• Experience in issuing or advising on coverage positions, including reservations of rights and denials.
• Strong grasp of liability, damages, and litigation strategy.
• Outstanding analytical, negotiation, and communication abilities.
• Capacity to manage multiple high-severity, complex claims independently.
• Proficiency in claims management systems and related tools.
• Background in professional liability, directors & officers coverage, or other complex liability lines (preferred).
• Experience collaborating closely with coverage counsel or in-house legal teams (preferred).
• Previous involvement in excess, umbrella, or specialty claims environments (preferred).
