This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.
• Define and implement the technical strategy for the entire product and platform infrastructure at Clause5afe.
• Build, recruit, and manage the engineering team from initial hires to scaling up (aiming for 8–15 engineers within the first 1–2 years).
• Design and deliver the essential certification platform, including the client onboarding portal, document management system, audit workflow tools, evidence collection, scoring/assessment engines, and certificate generation.
• Create the public certification registry — a transparent and searchable database that allows independent verification of certification status.
• Develop API infrastructure for enterprise integrations, facilitating clients' connections between their AI systems and our monitoring and compliance tools.
• Establish standards for security, privacy, and infrastructure appropriate for a company that certifies others on these critical topics.
• Collaborate with the CCO to transform certification methodology into scalable technical workflows.
• Assist with investor due diligence regarding technical architecture, scalability, and product roadmap.
• Manage relationships with vendors for cloud infrastructure, DevOps tools, and third-party integrations.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering, with no less than 5 years in a technical leadership position (such as VP Engineering, CTO, or Principal Engineer).
• Demonstrated success in building SaaS platforms from the ground up within a startup or early-stage setting.
• Strong skills in full-stack architecture, including expertise in Python or Node.js for backend, React for frontend, and cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure).
• Experience with compliance, audit, or GRC (governance, risk, compliance) platforms is a considerable advantage.
• Profound understanding of security best practices, including data encryption, access controls, and secure application development.
• Proven ability to hire, manage, and mentor engineering teams during periods of rapid growth.
• Capability to translate business needs into technical architecture and manage engineering timelines aligned with business milestones.
• A startup mentality — comfortable with building from the ground up, making tradeoffs, and delivering quickly without compromising quality.

• Experience with AI/ML systems, model evaluation, or AI governance tools.
• A background in enterprise software for regulated industries such as fintech, healthtech, or cybersecurity.
• Experience developing developer-facing products, APIs, or open-source tools.
• Previous experience in a CTO/VP Engineering role at a company that achieved SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar certifications (providing insight into our clients’ world from the inside).
