
Backend Engineer, Identity

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Contribute to the development of the Tailscale product by working on both the open-source client code and associated backend services.
• Assume responsibility for the complete product lifecycle, from coding to product ideation and strategic decision-making.
• Collaborate closely with UX/UI designers and product managers to refine features.
• Focus specifically on building features that relate to identity and access management.
• Engage as part of a team of engineers to design, develop, test, and document essential software components.
• Create product features in areas including our control plane, platform, and identity services.
• Implement features that accommodate a wide array of sign-on functionalities, such as SSO, OAuth2, SAML, and WebAuthn.
• Develop and maintain SCIM-style capabilities to synchronize users, groups, and other attributes from Identity Providers (IdPs).
• Demonstrate ownership over the operational services that make up Tailscale’s product by enhancing observability, participating in incident response, and handling customer support escalations.
• Evaluate and enhance the efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources.
• Adopt a security-first approach in both design and implementation.
• Join our on-call rotation every x weeks to triage and mitigate incidents.
• Knowledge of authentication and authorization protocols, standards, and frameworks such as OAuth2, OIDC, SSO, and SAML.
• Experience in distributed systems and in building observable, secure, scalable, and resilient services.
• The majority of the non-front-end parts of the system are developed using the Go programming language.
• Proficiency with one or more SQL databases.
• Capability to provide and receive constructive feedback while also working independently.
• Adaptability to the ever-changing nature of a startup environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with networking concepts (IP addressing, routing, etc.) is an advantage.
