• The Assistant Director of the Organizing Capacity Center is tasked with developing, implementing, and coordinating training programs and various learning opportunities aimed at enhancing the organizing capabilities of SEIU for International Union and Local Union personnel.
• The Assistant Director should be adept at evaluating existing organizing capacity gaps and pinpointing strategies, opportunities, and learning environments to address those needs.
• Collaborating with senior organizing leadership, this role involves creating and executing innovative organizing capacity building programs.
• Identifying gaps in organizing capacity and proposing programmatic solutions such as training, learning environments, and developmental opportunities is essential.
• This position requires collaboration and coordination with campaigns, the IU Organizing Hub, and local unions to develop and implement effective capacity building strategies and programs.
• The Assistant Director will assist the Organizing Capacity Center Director in devising and executing strategies that enhance and strengthen the organizing community within the IU and Local Unions.
• Mentoring and coaching senior local leadership to build capacity is a key responsibility.
• The role involves creating and executing training programs for organizing staff that align with the goals and strategies of new (external) organizing campaigns as well as SEIU's overall objectives.
• Relevant and effective training materials, including curricula, handouts, PowerPoint presentations, and interactive exercises, will be developed and authored.
• Employing creative training techniques and methodologies to teach concepts, skills, and best practices in union organizing, campaign execution, and staff development is crucial.
• Teaching strategies will be adapted based on the audience, applying optimal approaches to maximize learning opportunities for trainees.
• Coordination with the IU Organizing Hub, other IU Hubs, departments, and local union leadership is required to create and implement strategic trainings, programs, and components for enhancing organizing capacity.
• This role provides leadership in maintaining SEIU’s overall organizing, campaigning, and staff development efforts.
• Facilitating and offering feedback in both large and small group training discussions, exercises, and practice labs is essential to support participants' development and enhance their comprehension and application of training materials both in the classroom and field.
• At least ten (10) years of experience in new (external) labor organizing, or a combination of seven (7) years in external labor organizing and three (3) years in internal (member) organizing or relevant issue-based community organizing.
• A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in campaign management, which includes supervising, leading, and developing organizing staff or teams.
• Three (3) years of experience in curriculum development and training, with demonstrated experience in adult education or training being a plus.
• While graduation from a two- or four-year college is not mandatory, it is considered beneficial.
• Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.
