This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of and enhance canonical data models.
• Manage and develop the dbt models that convert raw source-system data into durable, report-ready tables.
• Continuously refine models by minimizing duplication, clarifying grain, and documenting business logic.
• Transform recurring reporting requirements into reusable models instead of one-time queries.
• Seek opportunities to streamline the data model, making reporting more comprehensible and manageable.
• Oversee the Lightdash semantic layer to ensure core metrics are consistently defined and documented where applicable.
• Uphold source-of-truth definitions, advocating for and phasing out metrics as business needs evolve.
• Enhance the reporting ecosystem over time by fostering more self-service analytics that are user-friendly.
• Establish and maintain observability, testing, and monitoring throughout the analytics stack to identify data quality issues early and address them across source systems, transformations, and BI outputs.
• Adhere to robust development practices, including version control, PR reviews, documentation, and testing.
• Evaluate analytics work for modeling quality and maintainability, and assist analysts in utilizing the stack effectively.
• Facilitate cross-training among teammates to ensure knowledge is disseminated rather than concentrated.
• Over 4 years of experience working with SQL and a modern cloud data warehouse.
• Significant hands-on experience with dbt.
• Proven experience in building and maintaining canonical data models and governed metrics that facilitate reporting and self-service analytics.
• Familiarity with a semantic layer or governed BI environment (such as Lightdash, LookML, dbt Semantic Layer, or similar).
• Strong understanding of data modeling concepts and the ability to navigate complex, evolving business environments effectively.
• Comfort in experimenting with AI tools in technical tasks, exercising sound judgment regarding validation, privacy, and data quality.
• A track record of proactively improving data models, reporting systems, or governance processes without waiting for comprehensive scoping of needs.
• Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including the ability to clearly explain trade-offs and limitations.
• Strong development discipline encompassing version control, code review, testing, and documentation.
• Capability to assist analysts and business partners in utilizing data in sustainable and governed manners.
