Aircraft Certification Engineer – Software Systems, DO-178C

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio.

📋 Description

• Offer Subject Matter Expert (SME) level expertise in embedded software development pertaining to aircraft systems.

• Act as the technical SME for aircraft certification, ensuring adherence to FAA regulations (RTCA DO-178C, RTCA DO-254) and MIL-HDBK-516C airworthiness criteria.

• Create, assess, and implement certification plans for MCDA programs.

• Collaborate with military airworthiness authorities and DER/DAR representatives to facilitate approval processes.

• Detect and address certification discrepancies that arise from the interaction between civil and military airworthiness standards.

• Guide junior engineers and aid in the advancement of internal certification processes, tools, and best practices.

• Execute additional responsibilities as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.

• Over 15 years of experience in aircraft certification related to aircraft software systems, with direct participation in FAA type certification or supplemental type certificate (STC) programs.

• Prior experience with military commercial derivative aircraft programs is preferred.

• Capability to pass a Tier 1 (minimum) Investigation for work on Department of Defense contracts.

• An existing security clearance is preferred.

• FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) authorization in one or more disciplines.

• Must possess an in-depth understanding of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14CFR - especially Chapter I, Part 25 and (RTCA DO-178C, RTCA DO-254), particularly as it relates to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulation procedures and the STC process.

• Requires experience in program management, strong communication skills, and a proven ability to coordinate certification programs for alterations and modifications.

• Should have experience in drafting certification documents such as ICAs, Ground/Flight Test Plans, Compliance Checklists, Project Specific Certification Plans, etc.
