This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• The AI and Data Assimilation Scientist will execute their responsibilities to a high standard, working both autonomously and collaboratively, with a focus on scientific advancements that promote the use of AI-DA techniques as a viable alternative to traditional ensemble and variational methods.
• A primary duty is to spearhead the development, implementation, testing, and evaluation of an AI-based Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis (AI-RTMA) system to support NOAA’s National Blend of Models (NBM).
• The AI-RTMA system is designed to produce high spatial and temporal resolution analyses of meteorological variables to minimize biases in the NBM outputs.
• Share findings with EMC scientists and external partners to enhance the development of a scientifically sound and efficient AI-RTMA methodology.
• Work in collaboration with NOAA’s NBM team and key stakeholders to establish product requirements for AI-RTMA, which include domain configuration, grid structure, output variables, spatial and temporal resolution, and data formats appropriate for operational evaluation and transition.
• Design, implement, and sustain robust data pipelines to facilitate AI-RTMA training, validation, testing, and evaluation.
• Develop, train, rigorously test, and deploy a fully operational AI-RTMA system based on selected AI frameworks or architectures.
• Apply cross-validation and other evaluation methods to assess model performance and reliability during inference.
• Demonstrated experience in developing, training, and deploying AI-based systems relevant to geophysical applications.
• Familiarity with popular AI frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
• Experience working with earth observation data, including conventional observations, satellite, and radar data.
• Comprehensive understanding of data assimilation techniques, including observation forward modeling, quality control, and variational or ensemble methods.
• Strong foundational knowledge of the physical, statistical, and mathematical principles of geophysical modeling, whether atmospheric or environmental.
• Proficient Python programming skills.
• Practical experience with High Performance Computers (HPCs) and GPUs.
• Proven capability in a UNIX environment, utilizing advanced scripting languages.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
• Comprehensive healthcare for the employee at no monthly cost.
