Wildlife Biologist – Field Focused

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Perform surveys for wildlife with special status and assess suitable habitat areas.

• Carry out field surveys to identify aquatic resources, including vernal pool complexes.

• Draft concise memoranda that document the findings of surveys.

• Execute pre-construction surveys for designated plant and wildlife species, as well as nesting birds.

• Lead the on-site Natural Resources Worker Environmental Awareness Program training for construction contractors.

• Oversee construction activities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits.

• Coordinate and liaise with AECOM leadership, clients, construction contractors, and agency personnel.

• Create daily monitoring logs summarizing work activities and compliance outcomes.

• Engage in AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting practice across California.

• Travel between Sacramento and Bakersfield for short-term assignments, which may include overnight travel.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field.

• A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education in construction monitoring, environmental inspection, habitat assessments, and biological surveys.

• A valid U.S. Driver's License is required.

• Capability to travel independently.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• Experience in surveying special-status species, specifically the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, giant garter snake, California tiger salamander, and western spadefoot.

• Familiarity with common and special-status wildlife species in California’s Central Valley and Central Coast regions.

• Proven experience in construction monitoring, leading WEAPs, collaborating with construction contractors, and implementing avoidance and minimization strategies.

• Proficient in identifying vernal pools and vernal pool species.

• Skills in California rare plant identification.

• Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps and Fulcrum.

• Ability to work safely in varying temperature conditions and manage potentially long workdays.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple priorities.

• 10(a)1(A) permit for listed wildlife is preferred.

• Four years of relevant experience is preferred.
