Wildlife Biologist – Field Focused

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Carry out surveys for wildlife of special status and identify suitable habitat areas.

• Perform field surveys to locate aquatic resources, including vernal pool complexes.

• Draft concise memoranda that detail survey findings.

• Execute pre-construction surveys for listed plant and wildlife species as well as nesting birds.

• Facilitate on-site Worker Environmental Awareness Program training for construction contractors.

• Oversee construction activities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits.

• Collaborate with AECOM leadership, clients, construction contractors, and agency personnel.

• Generate daily monitoring logs that summarize work activities and compliance status.

• Engage in AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting practice across California.

• Travel between Sacramento and Bakersfield, fulfilling short-term assignments that may involve overnight stays.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related discipline.

• 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent experience and/or education in construction monitoring, environmental inspection, habitat assessments, and biological surveys.

• A valid U.S. Driver's License is mandatory.

• Capability to travel independently.

• U.S. citizenship is required.

• Preferred: 4 years of relevant experience.

• Preferred experience includes surveying for special-status species such as the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, giant garter snake, California tiger salamander, and western spadefoot.

• Preferred to possess a 10(a)1(A) permit for listed wildlife.

• Knowledge of common and special-status wildlife species in California’s Central Valley and Central Coast regions is essential.

• Experience in conducting construction monitoring, leading WEAPs, collaborating with construction contractors, and implementing avoidance and minimization strategies.

• Familiarity with identifying vernal pools and surveying for vernal pool species.

• Skills in California rare plant identification are preferred.

• Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps and Fulcrum is advantageous.

• Ability to work safely in varying temperatures and potentially long hours.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the capacity to manage multiple priorities are essential.
