VP of Research, Machine Learning

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Singapore.

📋 Description

• Establish and advance the research trajectory for A1’s core intelligence, encompassing context representation, memory, reasoning, planning, and orchestration.

• Determine when to create new model architectures versus adapting or utilizing cutting-edge open-source or commercial models.

• Create evaluation frameworks that assess real-world applicability, robustness, safety, and long-term behavior—moving beyond mere benchmark achievements.

• Take ownership of alignment, safety, and guardrail strategies as integral product priorities.

• Steer the exploration of innovative techniques such as:

• retrieval-augmented training

• mixture-of-experts

• distillation

• multi-agent orchestration

• multimodal systems

• Influence the initial product intelligence direction in close collaboration with product and application engineering teams.

• Establish the standard for research rigor, judgment, and aesthetic value throughout the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in building or improving real machine learning systems deployed in production.

• Strong technical acumen regarding model behavior, failure modes, and long-term trade-offs.

• A builder's mindset: you prioritize functional systems in the real world over mere concepts.

• Comfortable making irreversible or high-stakes decisions with insufficient information.

• A passion for evaluation, correctness, and understanding how systems evolve over time.

• A strong sense of ownership—operating as a founder rather than merely a manager.
