VP of Engineering, Applications

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the application engineering strategy and its implementation across backend, mobile, and desktop platforms.

• Lead and expand a small, senior team of application engineers, comprising backend, mobile, and desktop specialists.

• Define the architectural roadmap for AI-driven product workflows, APIs, and client integrations.

• Ensure the seamless integration of AI capabilities into the product, featuring clear abstractions, predictable behaviors, and graceful failure modes.

• Collaborate closely with Machine Learning leadership to convert model capabilities into deployable product features.

• Make impactful decisions regarding latency, cost, reliability, security, and user experience.

• Establish distinct ownership boundaries across backend, mobile, and desktop to avoid architectural drift.

• Guarantee production readiness by focusing on observability, monitoring, retries, fallbacks, privacy, and cost control mechanisms.

• Strike a balance between speed and discipline – ensuring rapid shipping without sacrificing long-term system quality.

• Extensive experience in leading application or product engineering for intricate systems.

• Strong practical background in developing and launching backend systems that are actively used in production.

• Experience in delivering AI-driven products, with a thorough understanding of the trade-offs involved in model integration.

• Exceptional system design capabilities spanning services, APIs, clients, and data flows.

• Comfortable working across various platforms (backend, mobile, desktop), even if your expertise lies primarily in one area.

• Demonstrated ability to make significant technical decisions amidst uncertainty.

• A strong inclination towards shipping, iterating, and learning from real-world application usage.

• Low ego, sound judgment, and the capacity to elevate the technical standards for the entire applications organization.
