
Vice President of Engineering – DevOps Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Establish the engineering strategy for your area of expertise, ensuring alignment of the roadmap, investment, and organizational planning with GitLab's overarching goals.
• Oversee a large, globally dispersed engineering team across various product domains, providing support to Directors, Senior Managers, Engineering Managers, and their respective teams.
• Promote operational excellence through the implementation of clear engineering metrics, effective incident management practices, and a systematic focus on reliability, quality, and developer productivity.
• Advocate for AI-native engineering practices across workflows, platforms, and products, encompassing developer tools, code reviews, and CI/CD processes.
• Collaborate with Product Management to establish a consistent, high-velocity operational model that bridges engineering and product teams.
• Work alongside Finance and executive colleagues on headcount planning, budgeting, forecasting, and evaluating investment trade-offs.
• Partner with Sales, Marketing, Alliances, Customer Success, and security leadership to meet enterprise needs and support key strategic initiatives.
• Represent your engineering division in executive discussions, board-level meetings, and external forums through effective communication and transparent documentation.
• Proven experience in leading large engineering organizations across multiple product areas in a distributed setting, including leadership roles involving Directors and Senior Managers.
• Strong technical credibility, enabling engagement with senior individual contributors and leaders regarding architecture, engineering quality, reliability, and system design trade-offs.
• Experience in constructing scalable frontend platforms or large-scale user-facing systems, complemented by backend or infrastructure expertise.
• Direct experience in transforming a monolithic application into a modular, independently deployable architecture in a production environment, including decisions on runtime composition and migration sequencing.
• Background in developing or scaling a design system that serves as a dependable contract between platform and product teams, focusing on versioning, testing, and documentation.
• Knowledge of AI-enhanced product development or integrating AI into developer workflows, with a clear distinction between AI features and AI-native architecture.
• Ability to function effectively in a remote-first, asynchronous, documentation-centric culture, showcasing clear written communication and solid organizational judgment.
• Strong cross-functional leadership capabilities, including collaboration with executive stakeholders on business cases, investment planning, customer requirements, and balancing innovation with operational stability; candidates with diverse experiences and relevant transferable skills are encouraged to apply.
