Technical Writer – Contract

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and maintain various documentation materials, including user guides, quick-start manuals, safety inserts, warning labels, packaging text, and troubleshooting resources.

• Write, update, and manage user manuals for all Therabody products, encompassing percussive therapy, heating and cooling, pneumatic compression, light therapy, and electrical stimulation devices.

• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineering teams to ensure the technical precision of all product documentation.

• Work alongside product management, marketing, and legal teams to guarantee compliance and uphold brand standards.

• Generate clear instructions for assembly, setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, complemented by relevant illustrations and diagrams.

• Create structured templates to maintain consistency throughout the entire product catalog.

• Write and sustain unit warnings, caution statements, and safety notices in accordance with relevant regulatory standards (UL, IEC 62368-1, IEC 60601 where applicable, FDA Class I/II guidelines).

• Develop risk communication language in line with ISO 14971 risk management outcomes.

• Ensure that all safety symbols, signal words, and hazard statements comply with ISO 7010, ANSI Z535, and specific regional market regulations.

• Collaborate with Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance teams to integrate compliance feedback into documentation updates.

• Assist in documentation review and approval processes across engineering, regulatory, legal, and quality teams.

• Prepare documentation for localization in multiple languages, partnering with internal translation teams to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance.

• Maintain region-specific versions of manuals to meet EU, UK, APAC, and other international regulatory standards.

• Oversee documentation updates, version control, and change tracking across different product generations, firmware updates, and regulatory changes.

• Keep organized source documents, revision logs, and approval tracking for product releases and regional variants.

• Provide finalized, approval-ready documentation to artwork and packaging teams for production layout and localization processes.

• Collaborate closely with Design and Brand teams to ensure that documentation aligns with Therabody’s premium aesthetic and tone.

• Engage in design reviews and product launch readiness milestones to ensure timely delivery of documentation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional technical writing experience, with a portfolio showcasing user manuals and safety documentation.

• Direct experience with medical devices (Class I or II), consumer electronics, or wellness/fitness technology products.

• Knowledge of documentation practices within regulated product environments, including FDA, IEC, UL, EU MDR, and/or CE marking requirements.

• Familiarity with ISO 14971 (risk management), IEC 62366 (usability engineering), and ANSI Z535 / ISO 7010 safety symbols.

• Proficient in structured authoring tools (e.g., MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Oxygen XML).

• Experience with content management systems, version control, and single-source publishing workflows.

• Exceptional written English skills, capable of simplifying complex technical concepts for consumer audiences.

• Strong project management abilities, with the capacity to handle multiple product lines and deadlines at the same time.

• Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, or a related field.

• STC (Society for Technical Communication) certification or equivalent professional credential.

• Experience in writing documentation for Bluetooth/app-connected hardware devices.

• Previous experience in a consulting or contract role across multiple product launches simultaneously.
