
Technical Lead, Power System Studies

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Lead projects focused on EMT power system studies with direct oversight.
• Responsibilities include guiding the studies team in developing methodologies, preparing models and project cases, analyzing simulation results, identifying system challenges and potential solutions, as well as preparing and reviewing study reports.
• Conduct client meetings to provide updates on project progress and share interim and final results.
• Offer technical support in AC and DC transmission system design and operations for various projects.
• Ensure the timely preparation of high-quality project deliverables that align with project schedules and budgets.
• Allocate resources effectively to guarantee prompt and quality delivery of outcomes.
• Engage in corporate marketing and business development efforts related to power system studies, particularly focusing on EMT analysis.
• Prepare proposals that include methodology development, staffing needs, and labor and expense cost estimates.
• Manage client relationships concerning business development activities and work assignments.
• Oversee research and development efforts linked to power system studies, new technologies, and innovative study techniques, modeling, and simulation.
• Expand and cultivate a network of industry contacts within the global power system community.
• Participate in international organizations such as IEEE, CIGRE, and IEC.
• Contribute by writing papers and presenting at technical conferences.
• Provide technical advice, guidance, and mentorship to members of the technical team.
• Offer insights into technical training needs and opportunities.
• Stay informed about the latest simulation tools and techniques prevalent in the industry.
• Extensive experience in power system studies with a focus on EMT analysis, complemented by a strong background in static and dynamic modeling of HVDC converters, static var compensators, STATCOMS, and other power electronic devices.
• Proficient in PSCAD and other EMT software applications.
• Solid experience with other power system analysis software, including PSSE, PSLF, ASPEN, ETAP, CYME, DSATools, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, etc.
• Proven experience in interacting with both internal and external clients.
• Capability to meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
• A self-motivated collaborator who is also an effective independent researcher.
• A self-starter with the ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision while also being part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adept at conveying information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong command of written and spoken English; proficiency in other languages is an asset.
• Ability to foresee potential issues and deliver creative, quick, and reliable solutions to complex problems.
• International experience in completing power system planning studies is advantageous.
• Advanced understanding of North American power systems and relevant standards and regulations, including NERC TPL standards.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
• A minimum of 15 years of experience as an electrical engineer, with a concentration on EMT studies for generation and transmission, renewable energy, battery storage, HVDC, and other inverter-based resource (IBR) systems.
