
Tax Reviewer, Small Business Returns

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Review federal and relevant state tax returns that have been prepared, prior to customer delivery or filing, including forms 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065.
• Ensure that returns are consistent with year-end financial statements, bookkeeping records, workpapers, prior-year information, and documents provided by customers.
• Detect significant errors, inconsistencies, missing schedules, classification challenges, unsupported positions, filing risks, and bookkeeping issues that need rectification before filing.
• Validate adjusting entries or request necessary corrections prior to customer delivery or filing.
• Review returns related to R&D credits/Form 6765, as applicable, including assessing the reasonableness of inputs, documentation sufficiency, and any escalation requirements.
• Offer clear, actionable feedback to preparers and ensure that corrections are made before a return is sent to the customer or filed.
• Conduct or assist in draft review calls when a technical explanation is required and articulate review findings in accessible language.
• Confirm that customer approval is informed and that the filing authorization corresponds with the correct return and year.
• Track returns during the review, client approval, and filing stages to prevent delays; promptly address internal and customer inquiries.
• Document review findings, decisions, assumptions, unresolved risks, and follow-up actions clearly.
• Escalate advisory or complex technical matters to BenchTax Advisors only when necessary, and monitor recurring preparer issues to aid in quality enhancement.
• With Power of Attorney, engage with IRS agents in both written and verbal communications on behalf of the customer.
• Comprehend IRS notices and advise customers on subsequent steps; offer first-time abatement letters when suitable.
• Prepare and file amendments.
• Valid IRS PTIN.
• Substantial experience in U.S. tax preparation and/or review.
• Strong grasp of small business and entity-level tax matters.
• Capability to review forms 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065.
• Proficiency in identifying significant tax errors, bookkeeping discrepancies, unsupported positions, and filing risks, along with the ability to articulate corrections clearly.
• Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication, and discipline in remote work.
• Comfort in speaking directly with customers via phone or video as necessary, and explaining complex tax issues to non-tax professionals.
• Strong computer proficiency and the ability to efficiently navigate multiple systems in a remote working environment.
• Independent ownership, responsiveness, and thorough follow-through throughout the correction, approval, and filing processes.
• Willingness to complete BenchTax’s written technical review assessment.
• Must meet Bench’s minimum hardware and internet requirements for effective communication and workflow.
