This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Examine federal and relevant state tax returns prior to customer delivery or submission, including 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 forms.
• Ensure returns are consistent with year-end financial statements, bookkeeping records, workpapers, historical data, and documents provided by the customer.
• Detect significant errors, discrepancies, absent schedules, classification problems, unsupported claims, filing risks, and bookkeeping matters that need correction before submission.
• Confirm adjusting entries or request necessary corrections prior to customer delivery or filing.
• Review returns related to R&D credits / Form 6765 where applicable, assessing the reasonableness of inputs, documentation, and any escalation needs.
• Offer clear, actionable feedback to preparers and verify that corrections are made before a return is sent to the customer or filed.
• Conduct or assist in draft review calls when a technical explanation is required and communicate review findings in straightforward terms.
• Ensure that customer approval is well-informed and that the filing authorization corresponds with the correct return and tax year.
• Oversee returns in the review, client approval, and filing stages to prevent delays; respond swiftly to questions from both internal and external stakeholders.
• Record review findings, decisions, assumptions, unresolved risks, and follow-up items in a clear manner.
• Escalate advisory or complex technical matters to BenchTax Advisors only when absolutely necessary, and track recurring preparer issues to aid quality enhancement.
• With Power of Attorney, correspond with IRS agents in writing and via phone on behalf of the customer.
• Comprehend IRS notices and guide customers on subsequent steps, including offering first-time abatement letters when suitable.
• Prepare and file amendments.
• Active IRS PTIN.
• Extensive experience in U.S. tax preparation and/or review.
• Solid understanding of small business and entity-level tax matters.
• Capability to review 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 returns.
• Proficient at identifying significant tax errors, inconsistencies in bookkeeping, unsupported claims, and filing risks, with the ability to clearly explain necessary corrections.
• Strong analytical skills, keen attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication, and discipline in remote work.
• Comfortable engaging directly with customers via phone or video as needed and explaining technical tax matters to non-tax professionals.
• Proficient computer skills and the ability to work effectively across multiple systems in a remote setting.
• Demonstrated independence, responsiveness, and follow-through throughout the correction, approval, and filing processes.
• Willingness to complete BenchTax’s written technical review assessment.
• CPA or Enrolled Agent designation is highly preferred.
• Big 4 experience is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with R&D credits and Form 6765, including reviewing documentation/substantiation and identifying when specialist/advisor review is warranted.
• Experience in reviewing returns for startups, software companies, engineering firms, product-development businesses, or other clients with substantial R&D activities.
• Previous experience as a senior preparer, reviewer, tax manager, or quality reviewer.
• Experience in reviewing returns prepared by others in a high-volume tax environment.
• Proficient with Drake Tax or similar professional tax software.
• Familiarity with remote workflows and tools such as Slack, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and portals.
