This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Evaluate prepared federal and relevant state tax returns prior to client delivery or submission, including 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 forms.
• Ensure returns are consistent with year-end financial statements, bookkeeping records, workpapers, previous year context, and documents provided by clients.
• Detect significant errors, discrepancies, missing schedules, classification problems, unsupported claims, filing risks, and bookkeeping matters that need correction before submission.
• Verify adjusting entries or request modifications prior to delivering or filing with clients.
• Review returns that involve R&D credits/Form 6765 where applicable, assessing the reasonableness of inputs, documentation, and necessary escalations.
• Offer clear, actionable insights to preparers and confirm that corrections are made before a return is sent to the client or filed.
• Facilitate or assist in draft review calls when technical explanations are necessary and articulate review findings in straightforward language.
• Ensure that customer approval is well-informed and that filing authorization corresponds with the accurate return and year.
• Oversee returns in the review, client approval, and filing phases to prevent delays; respond swiftly to both internal and client inquiries.
• Clearly document review findings, decisions, assumptions, unresolved risks, and items that require follow-up.
• Escalate advisory or complex technical matters to BenchTax Advisors only as needed, and track recurring preparer issues to enhance quality.
• Valid IRS PTIN.
• Extensive experience in U.S. tax preparation and/or review.
• Strong comprehension of small business and entity-level tax matters.
• Capability to review 1040, Schedule C, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 returns.
• Ability to identify significant tax errors, bookkeeping discrepancies, unsupported claims, and filing risks, along with providing clear explanations for corrections.
• Strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, effective written/verbal communication, and discipline in remote work.
• Comfort engaging with clients by phone or video when necessary, explaining technical tax concepts to non-tax professionals.
• Proficient computer skills and the ability to work efficiently across various systems in a remote setting.
• Independent ownership, responsiveness, and follow-through during the correction, approval, and filing process.
• Willingness to complete BenchTax’s written technical review assessment.
• CPA or Enrolled Agent designation strongly preferred.
• Big 4 experience strongly preferred.
• Experience with R&D credits and Form 6765, including reviewing documentation/substantiation and recognizing when specialist/advisor review is necessary.
• Familiarity with reviewing returns for startups, software companies, engineering firms, product-development businesses, or other clients focused on R&D.
• Prior experience as a senior preparer, reviewer, tax manager, or quality reviewer.
• Experience with reviewing returns prepared by others in a high-volume tax environment.
• Proficiency with Drake Tax or similar professional tax software.
• Experience with remote workflows and tools such as Slack, Google Workspace, Salesforce, and client portals.
• Must meet Bench’s minimum hardware and internet specifications for effective communication and workflow.
• Must be available to work during North American business hours (8 AM – 4 PM EST or PST).
