This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Evaluate electrical substations, encompassing layout, equipment selection, and specifications in alignment with project objectives and industry standards.
• Analyze load flow, short circuit, and relay coordination studies to guarantee the reliability and efficiency of substation designs.
• Create and review comprehensive engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications utilizing AutoCAD electrical or Bluebeam.
• Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, including utility companies, contractors, and regulatory bodies to secure approvals and permits for substation initiatives.
• Assess vendor proposals for technical accuracy against specifications for substation components.
• Recognize opportunities for design enhancements, improvements, or value engineering solutions.
• Offer technical assistance during the construction, testing, and commissioning of new substations, ensuring adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
• Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to substation equipment and systems, both remotely and onsite.
• Conduct root cause analysis and suggest corrective measures for substation failures.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in substation design, automation, and protection systems.
• Aid in the establishment of standards, procedures, and guidelines for substation engineering tasks.
• Work in tandem with cross-functional teams, including transmission planners, protection engineering, control systems specialists, PV engineering, and BESS engineering to ensure the smooth integration of substations into the overall power grid.
• Engage in safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards within substation facilities.
• Support the mentoring of junior engineers, technicians, and peers by providing guidance, training, and insights on substation design principles and practices.
• Keep precise documentation and records of substation designs and modifications.
• Regularly participate in team meetings and calls.
• Uphold and promote a safe working environment and direct safe work practices in energized substations.
• Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
• Willingness to travel as necessary (approximately 10%).
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field; a master's degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years in substation design, construction, or maintenance, or equivalent design experience.
• Solid comprehension of power systems, including transmission, distribution, and generation.
• Proficiency in engineering software tools such as ETAP, SKM, or PSS/E for power system analysis is advantageous.
• Familiarity with protection relay programming, coordination studies, and simulation software (e.g., SEL, GE Enervista) is a plus.
• Knowledge of relevant industry standards and codes, such as IEEE, ANSI, and NESC.
• Strong technical skills in substation layout, equipment sizing, and protection coordination.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting (both local and remote).
• Detail-oriented with robust problem-solving capabilities and a commitment to quality.
• Capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
• Willingness to pursue licensure is an advantage.
