This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Lead a small team of storage, database, and systems administrators, including providing mentorship, managing performance, and fostering career development.
• Coordinate datacenter operations across both production and research facilities.
• Align the team’s priorities with the organization’s goals to ensure timely delivery of projects.
• Participate in hiring processes and manage on-call schedules along with incident response.
• Architect, implement, and maintain highly available and high-performance storage systems.
• Define automation strategies for the deployment and monitoring of storage solutions.
• Oversee capacity planning, performance tuning, archiving, backups, and data protection for large-scale datasets.
• Provide architectural guidance and hands-on support for Ceph at petabyte scale.
• Manage physical datacenter infrastructure, including equipment installation and decommissioning.
• Collaborate effectively with networking, virtualization, research, and application teams.
• Enhance CI/CD and configuration management processes.
• Support database operations through performance tuning and storage optimization.
• Develop runbooks and coordinate remote-hands and onsite operations.
• Troubleshoot distributed filesystems, databases, Linux servers, storage infrastructure, and physical hardware.
• Enhance observability using monitoring tools.
• Over 5 years of experience in Linux Systems Administration with a significant recent focus on storage systems.
• At least 2 years of experience in team leadership, technical project management, or mentoring.
• Knowledge of distributed storage systems such as Ceph, along with technologies like RAID, SAN, and NAS.
• Experience in archiving, backup, and retention of petabyte-scale data.
• Hands-on experience with co-located datacenter infrastructure.
• Ability to travel to remote datacenter sites as necessary.
• Strong scripting or development experience in Bash and/or Python.
• Familiarity with Ansible and infrastructure automation.
• Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios/CheckMK, Prometheus, and Grafana.
• Understanding of KVM, ESXi, Docker, and Podman.
• Knowledge of LDAP/IPA/AD and centralized identity management.
• Preferred qualifications include experience with Kubernetes, PostgreSQL DBA, high-throughput research or trading environments, RHEL/CentOS/Rocky Linux, DCIM tools, CI/CD and DevOps, and colocation vendor relationships and SLAs.
