• In your role within a cross-functional team of mobile, web, back-end, and infrastructure engineers, you will design, architect, code, and support video features throughout the video pipeline stack, encompassing live video ingestion, transcoding, integration, storage, and playback at scale.
• Collaborating closely with the Engineering Manager and Product Manager of the video team, you will play a key role in influencing, communicating, and iterating on the strategic roadmap for the technology that powers our video features as we continue to expand and enhance our capabilities.
• Work in tandem with mobile, web, machine learning/computer vision, and platform teams on diverse projects across the entire video processing system to enhance user experiences and achieve business objectives.
• Review and provide constructive feedback on designs and code pull requests, collaborate on architectural decisions, and offer guidance and hands-on assistance as necessary.
• Assist in the development and connection of internal SDKs, frameworks, and tools to facilitate product development teams in seamlessly integrating video into the product at various stages of the video pipeline.
• Define and establish real-time monitoring and measurement systems for essential operational workflows in the video pipeline, including tools for on-call developers and customer support to manage and resolve issues. Participate in an on-call rotation with a team of engineers to support video workflows a few days each month.
• Lead, mentor, interview, and onboard other software engineers in the video and live-streaming domain.
• Be available for on-call rotation to support our production systems in the event of off-hour issues.
• A robust background in video and audio streaming, ideally with an emphasis on live-streaming of user-generated content.
• Significant experience in architecting and constructing scalable, high-performance video pipelines in cloud environments. While we utilize AWS, experience with any cloud/container technologies is acceptable.
• A strong grasp of audio and video packaging principles, codecs, and related technologies and tools, including their respective trade-offs, such as MPEG Video, MPEG-2 TS, HLS, DASH, H.264 AVC/H.265 HEVC/VP9/AV1/VVC, RTMP/enhanced RTMP/SRT, FFMPEG, DRM, etc.
• Practical software development experience in designing and building live and VOD streaming workflows, along with exposure to a wide range of video technologies related to mobile broadcasting, ingestion, transcoding, storage, playback, and associated systems at scale.
• Proficiency in reading (and ideally coding) languages commonly used in the video domain such as C#/Golang/C++/Rust/Python, as well as familiarity with higher-level languages like Node/Typescript, React, or mobile languages like Kotlin or Swift.
• Experience in designing, building, and connecting internal APIs/SDKs across the stack (from backend to frontend) to enable swift feature development.
• Experience in mentoring, training, and collaborating with other teams through documentation and live sessions on best practices for building features utilizing the systems we develop and maintain.
• Familiarity with mobile video broadcasting of user-generated content and the challenges of optimizing streaming quality and reliability across various devices and network conditions.
• Hands-on experience with one or more video players.
• Experience in front-end development for web, iOS (Swift), and/or Android (Kotlin) is required. A willingness to learn and work in unfamiliar front-end areas is a significant advantage.
• Familiarity with computer vision concepts, architectures, and/or tools is a plus.
• Understanding of video advertising systems concepts, architectures, and/or tools is a plus.
