This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Assist in establishing the technical direction for the ControlCheck team, creating projects that span several domains (front-end, back-end, infrastructure) over extended periods, rather than just sprints.
• Play a vital role in key architectural decisions for services developed using Ruby on Rails and Python FastAPI, deployed through Terraform, while guiding the team on architectural selections.
• Make essential technical and architectural decisions within the timeframes required by the team.
• Lead efforts to proactively decouple services and implement effective microservices patterns as ControlCheck expands.
• Identify and tackle the most complex technical challenges in the codebase — expert-level debugging across distributed systems and intricate applications.
• Elevate the overall technical capabilities and performance of the team — the objective is to double (or more) the team's collective output, rather than just personal contributions of 5–10x.
• Oversee cross-team dependency management and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts with Product, QA, and other engineering teams while fostering productive relationships throughout the organization.
• Clearly articulate large systems and technical trade-offs to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders, including during roadmap and planning discussions.
• Influence at the Engineering Manager level — work closely with your EM and fellow technical leaders on team execution, hiring signals, and technical roadmap, providing guidance across the broader engineering team, not just among direct collaborators.
• Mentor senior engineers and act as an escalation point for the team's most challenging technical issues.
• Uphold a 'customer service' mindset towards the rest of the team — your role is to enhance everyone else's work.
• Over 9 years of professional software engineering experience, demonstrating expertise across the entire stack.
• Deep specialization in one or more areas (front-end, back-end, or infrastructure), coupled with a working knowledge of the other areas.
• Proven history of contributing to a team's technical direction and successfully driving multi-month, cross-domain initiatives to completion.
• Strong grasp of relational database systems (MySQL), with experience designing for scalability.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and ownership of production services from start to finish.
• Demonstrated capability to influence architectural decisions across multiple teams, not just your own, including long-term architectural strategy.
• Exceptional communication skills — capable of explaining large systems and complex trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders and fostering alignment among teams.
• A leadership approach based on service and collaboration: your success is measured by the team's performance, not solely your own.
• Experience in mentoring senior engineers and fostering technical judgment in others.
• Comfortable co-leading technical direction alongside other senior technical voices on the team.
• **Nice to Have**
• Experience in database administration, preferably with AWS Aurora MySQL.
• Familiarity with integrating Electronic Health Record (EHR) data into enterprise software.
• Previous experience in a regulated/compliance-driven healthcare or controlled-substance sector.
• Experience applying AI and LLMs — AWS ecosystem preferred (e.g., AWS Bedrock or similar managed AI services).
• Unlimited vacation days!
• Generous insurance coverage.
• 401k program with a company match.
• Fun, collaborative culture!
