Staff Software Engineer, Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Engage in the hands-on design and implementation of Kotlin backend services aimed at enhancing our device management workflows for customers.

• Spearhead the design and development of the upcoming generation of Toast’s software services and applications.

• Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and other Software teams to outline the product roadmap and requirements.

• Develop technical specifications and detailed designs for the software systems being created.

• Facilitate effort estimation sessions and apply sound judgment to assist in project planning.

• Identify performance bottlenecks and execute optimizations.

• Establish software quality standards by integrating modern software testing frameworks and practices into daily development routines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in the design and implementation of robust backend services.

• Expertise in a contemporary object-oriented programming language, such as Java or Kotlin.

• Proven technical leadership skills, with the capacity to foster cross-team alignment and influence among engineering, product, and business stakeholders.

• Experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies to improve scalability and maintainability.

• Knowledge of best practices in backend application lifecycle management, encompassing database, service, and API design strategies.

• Experience in developing single-page frontend applications with React.

• Awareness of AI-augmented development workflows and tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar).
