Staff Platform Engineer, Data Storage – Core

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the database liaison responsibilities for a collection of production PostgreSQL/RDS instances, including query evaluations, schema modification approvals, performance optimization, and incident management for the associated teams.

• Manage and enhance our Kafka/MSK streaming platform: oversee topic lifecycle management through GitOps, ensure cluster health across various environments, and maintain the reliability of CDC (Debezium) pipelines.

• Develop and sustain self-service tools that empower product teams to provision database and streaming resources independently, without needing to submit manual ticket requests.

• Lead platform stability initiatives — including operator/version upgrades, identifying root causes for recurring operational challenges, and proactively optimizing capacity and costs across the database and streaming environments.

• Serve as the technical escalation contact for cross-team incidents that trace back to shared data infrastructure issues (such as replication lag, connection exhaustion, or CPU/throughput challenges).

• Represent Platform Storage in cross-organizational infrastructure projects and standardization initiatives.

• Provide mentorship to engineers and participate in on-call duty rotations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in platform, infrastructure, or database engineering, with extensive hands-on experience managing PostgreSQL (RDS) in production settings at scale.

• Significant experience in operating Kafka (either MSK or self-managed) in a production environment, including topic administration and CDC/event-streaming pipelines.

• Proficient in SQL — capable of diagnosing query performance problems and evaluating schema modifications for teams outside your direct oversight.

• Expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).

• Proven track record of managing production database reliability for multiple downstream teams concurrently — capable of prioritizing across a portfolio rather than focusing on a single system.

• Strong communicator across teams; this position involves equal parts infrastructure engineering and technical collaboration with the teams you support.
