This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Act as the technical leader for the Data Engineering team, taking charge of architecture and design choices for essential data systems.
• Collaborate with Data Analysts, SREs, IT Engineers, and business units to clarify requirements, validate outcomes, and communicate risks, trade-offs, and timelines.
• Manage and operate Cribl’s self-hosted Prefect orchestration platform, focusing on operational hygiene, upgrades, worker management, and cost/footprint considerations.
• Oversee Cribl’s Snowflake environment, which includes data modeling, performance enhancement, cost optimization, RBAC/permissions design, tooling, and governance.
• Design, operate, and monitor data pipelines, ingestion services, integrations, and the data warehouse.
• Enhance the dbt practice, including the dbt Fusion migration, while managing warehouse costs and performance at scale.
• Develop cloud-native AWS services and infrastructure, encompassing event-driven ingestion, APIs, upsert patterns, package reuse, and infrastructure as code.
• Promote Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code methodologies with reusable modules, deployment patterns, CI integration, and operational hygiene.
• Collaborate with the Data Engineering manager to establish technical direction, roadmap, standards, and architectural trade-offs.
• Mentor and develop junior and mid-level data engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, design feedback, and coaching.
• Support data science and agentic initiatives by preparing model-ready datasets, exposing features, and integrating AI/LLM workflows into production.
• Contribute to secure and compliance-oriented engineering practices in collaboration with IT/Security.
• Occasionally perform responsibilities outside standard working hours due to global time zone considerations.
• Profound expertise in Snowflake, including advanced data modeling, query and warehouse performance tuning, cost management, and security/RBAC design.
• Experience in a tech lead or staff-level engineer role, setting direction, driving architecture, and delivering complex systems across a team.
• Exceptional communication skills and proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally across data, engineering, and business teams.
• Demonstrated history of mentoring junior and mid-level engineers through coaching, code reviews, and collaborative work.
• Strong fundamentals in Python and SQL, coupled with solid experience in ELT patterns and data modeling.
• Practical experience in managing self-hosted or self-managed orchestration, with a preference for Prefect, though experience with Airflow/Dagster on personal infrastructure is acceptable.
• Comfortable with managing orchestration upgrades, worker management, and operational footprint.
• Hands-on experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code practices using Terraform or similar tools.
• Experience in building cloud applications or backend services, including APIs, ingestion services, and event-driven workflows.
• Adherence to production-grade engineering practices such as logging, alerting, versioning, and CI/CD.
• Proficiency in utilizing AI-assisted development platforms like Claude Code.
• Willingness to occasionally take on responsibilities outside of standard working hours across different time zones.
