Staff Chief Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants anywhere in the world.

📋 Description

• Leading the engineering team and crew in performing maintenance and repairs.

• Planning and overseeing preventive maintenance according to scheduled intervals and machinery repairs.

• Ensuring proper organization and storage of spare parts and consumables, while adhering to stock control protocols.

• Assisting the Hotel Services Engineer with the preventive maintenance of deck machinery and equipment to guarantee safe and reliable operations.

• Providing necessary engineering insights and support to the Safety Manager for conducting preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and repairs of all safety equipment.

• Collaborating closely with the Safety Manager to aid in the investigation of engineering-related accidents and incidents, fostering a strong Safety & Health culture aimed at accident prevention.

• Participating in Health Safety and Environment & Energy (HSE) Committee meetings to promote and maintain awareness of Safety, Health, and Environmental issues.

• Leading the creation and execution of risk assessments for the Engineering section.

• Ensuring that engineering personnel are well-acquainted with the Company's Management System.

• Inspiring engineering officers and ratings to perform their responsibilities in accordance with the Company's Management System.

• Making certain that activities within the Engineering section are effectively planned, organized, and that safeguards are in place against all identified risks.

• Assisting the Chief Engineer as necessary in supervising fuel oil and diesel oil bunkering and transfer operations, ensuring effective collaboration with barge and/or shore personnel during these operations.

• Overseeing all sludge, bilge, black, and grey water discharge operations to shore facilities.

• Verifying that corrective and preventive measures are enacted promptly and effectively.

• Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer any incidents that could potentially impact Quality, Safety, Health, Environment & Energy, Security operational capability, or reliability.

• Regularly reviewing the Company’s Management System and presenting proposals for improvement to the Chief Engineer.

• Ensuring complete adherence to the Engineering Requirements specified in the Machinery Space Operations Procedures.

• Managing the ship’s waste streams effectively in accordance with the Company’s Environmental Procedures and relevant legislation.

• Ensuring that the Staff Chief Engineer’s handover notes include a thorough environmental compliance section detailing the handling and discharge of any vessel-generated wastes or slops, along with the operation of the Oily Water Separator (OWS), Oil Content Monitor (OCM), and Incinerator.

• Making sure that all blank and potentially removable flanges on all piping systems leading overboard in the Engine Room are sealed.

• Properly documenting all environmental seals utilized in the Staff Chief Engineer’s Environmental Seals Log Book (ER-ESLB).

• Daily measuring, monitoring, and managing all shipboard machinery space generated wastes.

• Overseeing and managing the condition of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), bilge, and lube oil tanks.

• Daily monitoring and managing the condition of any equipment with oil-to-sea interfaces (weather and safety permitting).

• Promptly addressing all environmental issues through repairs or relevant Management System procedures, including malfunctioning pollution prevention equipment, waste handling or monitoring tools, and leaks (from pump seals, packing glands, or line breaks) that contribute to the accumulation of bilge fluids, oily mixtures, and sludge in the engine room or other machinery spaces.

• Ensuring all Engine Room wastes that require special handling, such as Hazardous Wastes, are managed properly.

• Ship/client specific qualifications: N/A.

• CCS specific qualifications.

• Familiarization (FAM) – onboard training as per MS.
