Staff Backend Engineer – Experiments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Take a prominent role in defining the technical vision for Pilot, Canva's platform for A/B testing and experimentation, guiding our evolution towards AI-driven product decisions at Canva's scale.

• Develop the technical roadmap for AI-driven, self-service product insights, collaborating closely with PM, PD, Data Science, and other teams to ensure the roadmap meets the actual needs of the teams.

• Influence the architecture and design of the experiments platform to accommodate Canva's expanding scale.

• Draft design documents, conduct design reviews, and make essential decisions regarding the evolution of the system, with a keen emphasis on enhancing the reliability and latency of the analysis pipeline.

• Serve as the technical guiding star for the team.

• Propel cross-team initiatives within Product Platform. Pilot operates as part of a larger ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with other platform teams, as well as PM, PD, and Data Science, to ensure our systems are cohesive and elevate standards across the company.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing distributed web applications on the JVM; proficiency in Java is required (familiarity with other JVM languages such as Scala, Kotlin, etc., is advantageous).

• Experience in planning and executing architectural changes, coupled with a creative and conceptual problem-solving mindset rather than a framework or library-centric approach.

• Extensive knowledge of computer science and engineering principles, including concurrency, data structures, and distributed systems.

• Understanding of resiliency techniques and patterns such as load balancing, throttling, back pressure, and circuit breaking.

• Experience in large distributed cloud environments (preferably AWS), with familiarity in cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes and Terraform being a plus.

• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, both in writing and verbally.

• Proven experience in facilitating collaboration and nurturing positive working relationships between stakeholders and engineers, encouraging a culture of trust, respect, and open dialogue.

• Experience in mentoring and guiding fellow engineers, assisting in resolving technical hurdles, and being a role model for the team.

• A genuine interest in how AI can revolutionize experimentation, not merely as a feature to implement but as a fundamental shift in how teams derive insights.

• Experience with large distributed data processing systems (e.g., Snowflake), accompanied by strong SQL and data modeling capabilities.
