Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.

📋 Description

• Design, enhance, and sustain core libraries, framework extensions, and shared components utilized by all engineering teams.

• Assume responsibility for system performance, scalability, and high-load architecture, ensuring that core services can manage substantial throughput with minimal latency.

• Actively monitor production behavior, investigate intricate application/database performance issues, and implement advanced metrics, dashboards, and alerting systems.

• Establish and promote best practices in concurrency, memory management, and resource utilization throughout the backend ecosystem.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including backend, web, mobile, QA, and product teams.

• Take charge of specific functional areas within our extensive architecture.

• Utilize AI tools and assistants as essential components of your development workflow—from system design to code review.

• Contribute to ensuring high test coverage, predictable production behavior, and effortless scalability.

• Foster engineering excellence through modern methodologies and continuous improvement.

⛳️ Requirements

• Profound, low-level comprehension of Java internals (JVM, GC behavior, memory management, concurrency/multithreading, and performance profiling).

• Advanced understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL), covering query optimization, indexing strategies, locking mechanisms, and connection pooling in high-load and distributed systems architecture, particularly high-throughput event streaming with Kafka (partitioning, replication, consumer group rebalancing, and tuning).

• Strong capabilities in system design, troubleshooting, and debugging.

• Comfortable and proactive in leveraging AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, etc.) as productivity enhancers.

• Hands-on experience in validating, refining, and taking ownership of AI-generated outputs.

• Upper-intermediate or higher level of English proficiency.
