Staff Attorney, Workers' Compensation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Manage all aspects of California workers’ compensation defense autonomously, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, lien strategies, settlements, hearings, and trial.

• Formulate and implement case strategies based on thorough factual investigation, legal research, and practical risk assessment.

• Draft and present motions, petitions for reconsideration, trial briefs, and, when necessary, appellate briefs.

• Prepare and present witnesses and evidence during trials, hearings, and ADR proceedings; collaborate with experts and third-party vendors as required.

• Deliver prompt and clear legal advice to claims partners and insured clients; consistently update on case status, recommendations, and valuation.

• Cultivate and sustain professional relationships with opposing counsel, judges/boards, and external partners while exhibiting diplomacy and strong advocacy skills.

• Enhance a learning culture by engaging in team meetings, case roundtables, file reviews, and providing occasional training for attorneys and claims partners.

• Keep abreast of updates in California workers’ compensation laws, WCAB procedures, and legal technology; fulfill continuing legal education obligations as necessary.


⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

• Active license to practice law in California.

• Good standing member of the relevant Bar Association.

• Strong skills in legal research, writing, and oral advocacy.

• Proven ability to independently manage a caseload, prioritize conflicting deadlines, and demonstrate sound judgment.

• Professional communication skills focused on client needs.

• Comfortable working primarily remotely and utilizing technology to maintain a paperless practice.

• Experience with WCAB trials/hearings and strong deposition capabilities.

• Background in drafting petitions for reconsideration and managing appeals.

• Familiarity with LexisNexis (or similar) and litigation/case management systems.

• Proven interest in mentoring/training and contributing to process enhancements.

• Staff Attorney: Minimum of 2 years of legal practice experience, including handling California workers’ compensation matters or equivalent experience.

• Senior Staff Attorney: Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience with significant, independent management of complex California workers’ compensation cases or equivalent experience.
