
Staff Applied Scientist, Search – Discovery

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design, optimize, and assess search retrieval and ranking systems.
• Develop recommendation algorithms from inception.
• Model the intent of members and projects to determine the optimal recommendations to present, along with timing and placement.
• Analyze behavioral and catalog data to uncover effective strategies.
• Enhance query parsing, intent recognition, and semantic comprehension for complex queries.
• Identify and assist in resolving catalog data quality challenges.
• Invent, prototype, implement, and refine formulas, models, and re-ranking methods.
• Assess image-based search and perceptual color matching.
• Create evaluation frameworks, success metrics, and conduct experiments.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and catalog teams to translate research into production and implement improvements.
• Proven experience in developing search, recommendation, or ranking systems that have been deployed to real users and enhanced performance metrics.
• Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, machine learning, statistics, or applied mathematics, or equivalent practical experience.
• Profound knowledge of search and recommendation systems, with a focus on retrieval, ranking, and relevance.
• Strong understanding of queries and natural language processing (NLP), including semantic and embedding-based retrieval techniques.
• Experience with statistical modeling, experimental design, and hypothesis testing.
• Capability to prototype and implement concepts hands-on.
• Experience in deploying machine learning or data systems in production, or closely collaborating on deployment efforts.
