This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Provide essential platform capabilities. You will engage with Ably's realtime offerings, including our foundational Pub/Sub APIs, the LiveObjects state synchronization layer, and AI Transport, the messaging infrastructure designed specifically for AI agent communication, with a focus on delivering new features, enhancing performance, resolving bugs, and conducting maintenance.
• Utilize AI tools effectively. You will leverage AI technologies for project planning, exploratory tasks, code generation, and documentation, while taking complete responsibility for correctness, architectural integrity, and the quality of deliverables. Rapid iterations are anticipated; however, compromises on quality are unacceptable.
• Address complex distributed systems challenges. You will partner with a skilled engineering team to tackle genuinely intriguing and demanding technical issues.
• Maintain a 'Developer First' mindset. You will collaborate closely with fellow engineers to pinpoint and resolve the most significant challenges developers encounter while building on Ably.
• Drive to see your efforts in the hands of customers. You will act with urgency to deliver your work, as you value the impact it has on the developers and organizations utilizing our platform.
• A strong passion for, or hands-on experience with, distributed systems and large-scale infrastructure.
• Familiarity with or experience in developing messaging queues, pub/sub systems, or large-scale streaming systems.
• Significant expertise in a high-level server-side programming language (Node.js or Go preferred).
• The capability to initiate tasks independently, navigate uncertainty, and make sound decisions with minimal guidance.
• A practical understanding of AI tools. You employ these tools to accelerate your work and enhance clarity in your thought processes, while recognizing where additional rigor beyond AI is necessary.
• A transparent and collaborative 'build in the open' approach. You are comfortable sharing your projects publicly, whether through writing about your work, discussing technical choices, or contributing to the broader developer dialogue concerning the challenges Ably addresses.
• Experience in dynamic, early-stage settings where adaptability and resourcefulness are essential skills.
• A remote-first and flexible working environment. Teams in the UK meet in person once a month at our London hub (near Old Street), and we gather as a company twice a year. Otherwise, you are free to work from wherever suits you best.
• Equity. As a growing startup, we want all team members to participate in the company's success through our EMI share options program.
• Enhanced holiday allowance. Our policy grants Ablyans 28 days of paid annual leave (27 standard days plus an additional day off to celebrate your birthday).
• Comprehensive parental leave package, allowing you to take the necessary time to bond with your new family member and recuperate.
• A home workstation budget of £500 upon joining (and £150 per annum thereafter), ensuring your home office is well-equipped for your comfort and productivity.
• A personal learning and development budget of £1000 each year, along with 5% of your working hours dedicated to skill improvement.
• Private healthcare coverage with BUPA.
• A medical cash plan that covers various medical and dental expenses.
• Mental health coaching and counseling services provided by Self Space.
• A monthly wellbeing budget through Juno.
• Life assurance and income protection benefits.
• Access to Tech and Cycle to Work schemes.
• A weekly snack allowance for our end-of-week “Need To Know” meeting.
• A fully-paid one-month sabbatical after five years with Ably.
