Software Engineer III – Device Connectivity

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• As a vital member of the Device Engineering team at Flock, your focus will be on the essential area of device connectivity.

• You will enhance our contemporary Android-based system architecture, prioritizing fleet stability and paving the way for our 5G upgrade strategy.

• Your role will involve ensuring that our edge devices sustain a reliable network connection in demanding, real-world outdoor settings.

• You will work on optimizing power consumption to extend battery life.

• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in the connectivity domain to understand what truly influences their work (e.g., cost efficiency, performance, and productivity).

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, along with 3+ years of experience in embedded systems or OS-level development.

• Extensive knowledge of low-level Android OS architectures (AOSP/Custom ROMs), particularly in system initialization (init processes), image partitioning, and file systems.

• Strong practical understanding of SELinux security protocols, permission management, and debugging access restrictions within systems.

• Direct experience with the cellular connectivity stack, including LTE/5G modems, Radio Interface Layer (RIL), AT commands, and SIM/eSIM management.

• A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot intricate system-level issues across hardware boundaries, kernel drivers, and Android user-space applications.

• Solid expertise in networking technologies, encompassing TCP/IP protocols, routing tables, Wi-Fi, and data optimization.

• Specific experience with Qualcomm chipsets and their related software tools is highly desirable.

• A systems-thinking mindset for problem-solving, assessing how RF environments, power limitations, and thermal conditions affect device performance.

• Proficiency in telemetry and data analysis, with the capability to interpret logs and network metrics to inform engineering decisions based on data.

• Strong skills in cross-functional collaboration, with experience working closely with Hardware, Product, and Cloud/Infrastructure teams to address fleet anomalies.

• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, combined with humility, curiosity, and a passion for knowledge sharing.
