
Senior Vice President, Government Affairs – Public Relations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversees, guides, and manages ASTHO's government relations, public relations, and state health policy teams to further ASTHO's mission of supporting, equipping, and advocating for state and territorial health officials in their efforts to promote public health and well-being.
• Designs and executes advocacy strategies and operational plans aimed at achieving advocacy, state health policy, and public relations objectives.
• Acts as ASTHO's spokesperson and authority on policy and legislative matters.
• Collaborates with the ASTHO board of directors and the government relations committee to create and implement an annual legislative agenda.
• Promotes the interests of chief health officers from state and territorial public health departments to Congress, the administration, media, and stakeholders.
• Leverages existing partnerships and cultivates new strategic relationships aligned with advancing state and territorial public health priorities.
• Provides tools and resources for senior health officials to utilize during direct engagements with members of Congress, the administration, and/or governors.
• Serves as a member of the Executive Team.
• Maintains collaborative relationships with staff and partner organizations.
• Leads public health coalitions on behalf of ASTHO to promote the organization's priorities, including those of ASTHO's affiliates.
• A Master's degree in public policy/government, public health, political science, business administration, or healthcare administration is preferred.
• At least 10 years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience, including experience on Capitol Hill and/or in lobbying.
• Strong understanding of the government public health system, relevant congressional committees, and administration departments and agencies.
• Demonstrated experience in promoting legislative agendas across a broad range of health issues.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; capability to articulate and explain complex concepts in easily understandable terms.
• Strong interpersonal skills necessary for coordinating, managing, and executing multiple projects in a demanding environment.
• Proficiency in developing project success metrics, analyzing progress, evaluating outcomes, and forecasting needs.
• Ability to monitor and analyze related project issues and legislation at both federal and state levels.
• Competence in working with extensive networks and representing ASTHO at meetings and conferences regarding project-related matters.
• Capacity to manage multiple projects and complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, with basic knowledge of other software applications (e.g., database, desktop publishing, etc.) and HTML and/or web page design.
