Senior Transportation Planner – Engineer, Travel Demand Modeler

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Engage in the hands-on development, calibration, validation, and application of travel demand models, including both trip-based and activity-based approaches.

• Implement, enhance, and sustain travel-demand models to meet project needs.

• Apply and refine mode choice models along with advanced discrete choice frameworks.

• Develop and implement dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) and multimodal modeling methodologies.

• Contribute to or create model components, tools, or extensions using C++ or other high-performance programming languages as necessary.

• Identify and resolve model and code issues, ensuring outputs are robust, efficient, and reproducible.

• Facilitate integration between modeling platforms, scripting environments, and core software components.

• Lead technical discussions with clients while remaining actively engaged in analytical tasks.

• Offer technical mentorship through code reviews, modeling guidance, and collaborative problem-solving efforts.

• Contribute to efforts in automation, performance optimization, and enhancements to workflow.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

• A minimum of 8 years of directly relevant, hands-on experience in travel demand modeling, or a demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

• Proven experience in developing, calibrating, and applying models effectively.

• Proficiency and experience with one or more platforms such as Cube, TransCAD, VISUM, TRANSIMS, DTALite, DynusT, or similar systems.

• Capability to develop custom data analysis routines using Python, R, C++, or comparable programming languages.

• Proficiency and experience with C++, or a demonstrated aptitude and interest in creating modeling-related software components.

• Experience working with large datasets and managing model workflows/pipelines.

• Advanced skills in Excel and data analysis techniques.

• Familiarity with GIS platforms, including ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
