Senior Substation Project Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Accountable for leading and coordinating all technical facets of substations and balance of plant for large and intricate HVDC projects.

• Guide the team by providing clear direction, setting expectations, and conducting reviews to ensure that objectives are achieved or surpassed.

• Identify key internal and external stakeholders along with their requirements, such as technical information and execution strategies, while driving effective communication to align efforts for optimal productivity.

• Responsible for engineering activities on the assigned project, including schedule development and updates, design safety, planning and tracking project design reviews, design optimization, On Time Delivery, risk management, and quality control/quality assurance.

• Oversee the work of engineers and designers, coordinating with sourcing and the project team on technical issues to comply with project specifications, budget management, and timeline goals.

• Collaborate with internal and external team members, including the Project Engineering Director, discipline PEMs, Designers, CAD Operators, Project Managers, and support organizations.

• Accountable for the creation of power single line drawings, plan and elevation drawings, general substation arrangements and layouts, construction details, and layouts for high voltage bus, cable, high voltage equipment, conduit, cable and wiring, grounding, and control buildings.

• Supervise or conduct related studies and calculations, as well as develop the bills of material.

• Manage a comprehensive project BOM & MDL from various sources, writing and/or reviewing High Voltage equipment technical specifications, and assisting sourcing for vendor quotations and evaluations.

• Act as the primary contact for technical issues for both the customer and project manager.

• Responsible for overseeing technical change control and risk management.

• Collaborate with the PED on the performance of engineering subcontractors.

• Ensure adherence to customer engineering CTQs.

• Assist in proposals and tenders for HVDC or substation projects.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

• At least 8 years of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering for electric utilities and renewable energy plants and projects.

• Experience as an Electrical Project Engineer in substation applications, including primary (outdoor) substation design and necessary studies.

• Willingness to travel up to 20%, including international travel.

• In-depth knowledge of High Voltage substation North American standards and guidelines (IEEE & ANSI standards and codes such as the NEC and the NESC), local Grid Codes, and related equipment (safety, application, sizing, and integration).

• Professional Engineering license in the United States, with the capability to review and seal your work and that of others under your supervision.

• Strong understanding of contract and project management, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), or Engineering equipment package (EEP) project execution.

• Solid grasp of civil engineering and structural design requirements related to substations.

• Practical knowledge of applicable design calculations for primary and secondary equipment, including battery sizing, DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus, fittings, insulator, and arrester selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection.

• Experience with HVDC projects and technology.

• Field-testing and commissioning experience with a focus on safe work practices.

• Proven electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.

• Excellent personal computer capabilities, including programming and design automation; familiarity with AutoCAD is highly desired.
