Senior Structural Engineer – Substation Focus

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Serving as the structural lead and designated engineer of record for substations, switchyards, and various electrical infrastructure projects, encompassing both greenfield and brownfield developments.

• Conducting engineering calculations and creating analytical models for the design of structural steel and concrete.

• Collaborating with Project Engineers and Project Managers to establish workload forecasts, design timelines, and budgets for civil and structural activities.

• Assisting in the formulation of task and effort estimates for proposal support.

• Contributing to the overall business development strategy related to substations and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.

• Coordinating with the civil and structural design team to guide the completion of engineering drawings.

• Engaging in multi-discipline collaboration to develop general arrangements, vendor procurement packages, and similar documentation.

• Developing, updating, and implementing group-specific standards.

• Preparing technical reports and presentations that articulate research findings and recommendations.

• Drafting project technical specifications and contract documents.

• Reviewing and validating work produced by peers and team members.

• Mentoring junior civil and structural engineers and contributing to the development of departmental standards.

• Occasional travel to other AECOM locations and client sites may be required.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.

• A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience or a proven equivalency of experience and/or education.

• Expertise in structural design for both overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems.

• Experience with substation projects.

• Professional Engineering Licensure (PE) is required.

• Preferred 10 years of experience, including at least 3 years as the structural engineering lead or engineer of record on projects.

• Thorough understanding of industry codes and standards (e.g., NESC, G.O.95, ASCE 113, ASCE 10, ASCE 48, IEEE 605, IEEE 693, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, RUS, ASCE design guidelines, NEC).

• Demonstrated experience in complex, multi-discipline programs/projects and CAD teams.

• Proficiency in executing work within 3D model environments.

• Progressive professional experience in modeling, analyzing, and designing steel structures and foundations.

• Familiarity with various voltage levels (4kV, 12kV, 138kV, 230kV, 500kV, etc.).

• Competence in PLS-CADD software packages (PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, etc.).

• Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g., Staad.PRO, SAP2000, MFAD, L-Pile).

• Experience working with remote teams.

• Experience in full EPC and Design/Build projects from inception to completion.

• Background in Owner’s Engineering.

• Experience with retrofit or brownfield projects.
