Senior Specialist, Environment

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Lead the design, assessment, and enhancement of environmental compliance and monitoring programs in alignment with regulatory standards.

• Oversee site-based Environmental Specialists, contractors, and students, including their orientation, development, and training.

• Create and sustain site-specific work procedures, health and safety protocols, and risk assessments, which include Personal Safety Cards and Job Hazard Analyses.

• Manage technical consultants and supervise both field and office-based work scopes.

• Evaluate technical reports generated by consultants.

• Oversee and report on project timelines, deliverables, and budgets, including planning for equipment costs.

• Provide technical and regulatory guidance to support mining operations.

• Assist with permitting processes for new projects and modifications to existing operations.

• Engage in planning related to water supply and mine-waste management.

• Maintain records in corporate risk and knowledge-management systems and support reporting obligations for the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission.

• Act as the primary site-based environmental contact for operational issues, including wildlife incidents, water and waste management, and spill reporting.

• Supervise the inventory, purchasing, and maintenance of environmental equipment and materials.

• Manage and participate in sampling and monitoring initiatives mandated by relevant licenses, permits, and agreements.

• Utilize ArcGIS and GPS software, including BaseCamp and MapSource, for mapping and navigation purposes.

• Ensure the safe and authorized operation of firearms within the Environment Department.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering degree.

• Five to ten years of relevant experience, preferably in the mining sector.

• Familiarity with environmental regulations, compliance monitoring, and related analytical techniques.

• Supervisory experience is considered beneficial.

• Experience in northern Canada is regarded as advantageous.

• Understanding of the northern regulatory landscape is deemed a plus.

• Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication abilities.

• Comprehensive knowledge of environmental monitoring and compliance initiatives.

• Capability to manage various priorities, deadlines, and budgets effectively.

• Strong skills in technical report evaluation and problem-solving.

• Collaborative mindset with the ability to engage respectfully with internal teams, contractors, regulators, and external organizations.

• Strong dedication to workplace health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

• Must acquire and uphold necessary security and medical clearances for access to the remote Ekati Mine Site.

• Proficient in ArcGIS and GPS software, including BaseCamp and MapSource.

• Ability to safely and lawfully operate firearms within the Environment Department.
