This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Develop the fraud detection platform by designing and implementing systems for fraud detection, risk decisioning, rule engines, scoring pipelines, and event-driven risk signals.

• Create tools for operators. Build investigation and review tools that support our Trust & Safety operations team in efficiently triaging, investigating, and resolving cases. You value both internal user experience and external customer satisfaction.

• Influence future developments. Collaborate closely with your manager, product team, and operations stakeholders to identify vulnerabilities, propose solutions, and help prioritize the development roadmap. Your domain expertise is crucial, and we seek your insights on our strategic direction.

• Adopt an adversarial mindset. Gain a comprehensive understanding of fraud vectors in fundraising and payment systems, including stolen cards, synthetic identities, friendly fraud, and campaign abuse, and assist in creating systems that evolve with emerging threats.

• Enhance payment integrity. Collaborate across our payment systems to reinforce the transaction lifecycle against potential abuse. While expertise in payments is not required from day one, a willingness to learn is essential.

• Mentor your peers. Guide your team in developing expertise in Trust & Safety. Share your knowledge and experiences, and assist your teammates through thoughtful code reviews.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of software engineering experience, particularly in fraud, trust & safety, risk, abuse prevention, or related fields.

• Proven experience in building fraud detection or risk decisioning systems, including rule engines, scoring systems, policy frameworks, or investigation platforms.

• Strong foundational knowledge in backend engineering. You can design scalable, event-driven systems and understand the trade-offs involved in distributed architectures. You have experience debugging production issues across various stack layers.

• Effective stakeholder collaboration. You work closely with end-users and cross-functional stakeholders to identify issues, validate solutions, and iterate based on feedback. You communicate effectively, ask insightful questions, and transform ambiguous needs into actionable plans.

• Sound judgment and prioritization skills. You can dissect vague problems, such as "our dispute rate is climbing," and collaborate with your team to develop a clear plan with defined next steps.

• Nice to Have: Familiarity with PHP/Laravel or similar MVC frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Django, etc.

• Experience in leading projects or feature areas from inception to completion.

• Knowledge of React/TypeScript for frontend development.

• Familiarity with Stripe's APIs, payment systems, disputes, Radar, or similar payment processing integrations.

• Experience in developing tools for operations or support teams (e.g., internal tooling, case management, review queues).

• Background in fundraising, nonprofit technology, or marketplace platforms where Trust & Safety challenges include campaign legitimacy, donor protection, or platform abuse.

• Exposure to event-driven architectures (CDC, Kafka, event sourcing) for real-time risk signal processing.

• Experience working with AWS (EKS/Kubernetes, RDS, etc.).
