This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and manage the backend services that support balances, margin, buying power, collateral, and lending - the systems that Wealthsimple relies on for accuracy.

• Take ownership of significant responsibilities from technical design to ensuring the reliability of your work in a production environment.

• Tackle complex challenges related to real-time accuracy, low latency, and high availability, ensuring our systems remain reliable during market hours and peak moments.

• Contribute to the evolution of our architecture as Leverage expands - introducing new lending products, handling larger scales, and developing an event-driven platform utilizing Kafka and a JVM services stack.

• Elevate quality and operational excellence through intentional design, thorough code reviews, and a strong sense of production ownership.

• Mentor and support the development of engineers around you through collaboration, code reviews, and immediate feedback, while also learning from them in return.

• Leverage AI-assisted tools to enhance speed and safety in shipping. We integrate AI into our workflow and continuously seek ways to optimize its use.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven history of developing and managing critical production systems relied upon by users or businesses.

• Strong backend engineering capabilities paired with sound judgment regarding system design, reliability, and trade-offs.

• Our primary language is Kotlin, complemented by Kafka and GraphQL - extensive experience with a similar technology stack is more important than an exact match, and we are willing to help you adapt to ours.

• Proven experience in creating services that are low-latency and highly available.

• A serious approach to production ownership, maintaining composure and methodical thinking during crises.

• Strong software quality practices: you produce well-tested, maintainable, and observable code. Your code reviews enhance both the codebase and the skills of those around you.

• Clear and consistent communication skills. You collaborate effectively with Product, Design, and other engineering teams, share context promptly, and seek assistance before becoming stuck.

• A deep curiosity about the underlying reasons for system designs - not only the code but the financial implications and the clients it serves.

• A passion for AI-assisted development, with an interest in influencing the standards of excellent, rigorous AI-assisted engineering within our team.
