This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Accountable for configuring, programming, integrating, and maintaining the SMA Power Plant Manager (PPM), which controls SMA's utility-scale inverters at the plant level.
• Ensure that the functions and parameters of SMA inverters and the PPM align with the expectations and requirements set forth by the customer for their projects.
• Oversee the performance of large-scale photovoltaic and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) power plant projects, which can reach hundreds of megawatts in size.
• Provide extensive control-related technical support throughout the complete process of complex customer projects across North America.
• Act as the primary contact during the pre-sales phase, collaborating with project developers, SCADA vendors, and EMS providers, while also serving as the main support for SMA America Service.
• Direct Control System Assessments by collecting project data and establishing functional requirements for the PPM.
• Evaluate electrical system parameters, grid code requirements, and plant configurations.
• Configure and/or articulate the PPM in applications such as active and reactive power control, grid-forming versus grid-following operation, state of charge balancing, battery dispatch strategies, and frequency response.
• Draft documents and high-level schematics illustrating how PPM functions align with project and grid specifications.
• Develop and assist in Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) to validate inverter functionality in accordance with project and grid standards.
• Facilitate integration testing and tuning, including interoperability with SCADA interfaces and third-party Power Plant Controllers, as well as Site Acceptance Testing.
• Other responsibilities as required or assigned.
• A Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, energy engineering, control systems engineering, or a related field.
• A minimum of 5-8 years of professional experience in power plant controls or SCADA systems.
• Strong knowledge of utility-scale PV and BESS system technologies, including practical experience with control systems, energy management systems, or communication systems for PV/BESS projects.
• A solid understanding of power system behavior at the Point of Interconnection (POI), grid codes, and grid-forming functionalities.
• Experience with communication protocols such as Modbus and DNP3.
• Familiarity with Real-Time Digital Simulators (RTDS).
• Knowledge of PLCs, edge controllers, or plant control systems.
• Familiarity with SCADA and EMS systems.
