Senior Product Counsel Director

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Act as the primary legal advisor to Rocket's product, engineering, and services teams, delivering proactive and strategic legal guidance throughout the entire product lifecycle.

• Lead Rocket's responsible AI legal initiative.

• Provide counsel on product development, commercialization, and market entry strategies.

• Serve as a key legal resource for technology transactions, encompassing licensing, strategic partnerships, and mergers & acquisitions (M&A).

• Support and, when appropriate, lead the management of the IP portfolio, compliance with open source and SCA regulations, and matters related to export control.

• Operate with considerable autonomy while driving cross-functional legal initiatives, enhancing processes, and ensuring legal compliance in product and AI across the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Outstanding academic credentials; a J.D. from an accredited law school is mandatory.

• Must maintain good standing with at least one State Bar.

• At least 10 years of experience in law firm and/or in-house legal roles, with extensive experience in intellectual property, technology transactions, and/or product counsel roles, including significant in-house exposure.

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in law firms and/or in-house legal positions focused on intellectual property law.

• An engineering or relevant technical degree along with experience in software and/or other high-tech industries.

• Profound understanding and practical experience with AI and machine learning legal issues, including governance frameworks, training data and model licensing, risks and liabilities associated with generative AI, and applicable or emerging AI regulations (such as the EU AI Act and US Executive Orders).

• Demonstrated senior leadership skills, including the ability to set strategic direction, influence at the executive level, and function as a deputy and leader across a diverse legal portfolio.

• Strong technical fluency in software, AI/ML systems, and associated technologies; capability to engage meaningfully with engineers and product managers on technical issues and translate technical concepts into legal risk assessments.

• Knowledge of and experience with relevant laws, such as software licensing, data protection, and export control regulations.

• Ability to articulate and defend risk assessments clearly; critically analyze business practices to ensure compliance with legal standards; provide guidance regarding business practice risks.

• The ideal candidate is a proven team player and consensus builder who adopts a business-minded approach to law.

• The successful candidate is a flexible self-starter and proactive problem solver capable of working independently while effectively managing significant client interactions.

• Strong written and oral communication skills are imperative.

• Ability to present information clearly, both in writing and verbally, and respond to inquiries from executives, managers, customers, and colleagues with a focus on client service.

• Must be diplomatic, approachable, and demonstrate good business and personal judgment.

• Ability to manage competing demands from multiple business clients in a fast-paced setting.

• Excellent organizational skills; capability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously, follow through, and meet deadlines.
