This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Spearhead PRP's proactive earned media strategy, identifying and pursuing opportunities to share stories with national, regional, and issue-focused media outlets.

• Foster and sustain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and producers across various beats, including civil rights, immigration, democracy, criminal justice, and local governance.

• Assist PRP's network of local government partners in crafting effective public relations strategies.

• Act as the primary media liaison for PRP, managing incoming press inquiries and coordinating swift responses to breaking news.

• Oversee the writing and editorial review of press releases, media advisories, op-eds, statements, and other external communications.

• Coordinate embargoed releases, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination to media partners.

• Lead the production of media events, including press conferences, media briefings, and media training sessions.

• Prepare PRP staff and local government leaders for prominent media appearances.

• Provide guidance on organizational public statements and devise messaging strategies.

• Monitor news cycles and developments in relevant issue areas, generating insights that inform strategic planning.


⛳️ Requirements

• Seven (7) to ten (10) years of pertinent professional experience in communications, media relations, or public affairs, preferably within a legal, civil rights, advocacy, or policy context.

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

• Proven ability to secure earned media placements in both national and regional outlets.

• Extensive experience in developing communications for senior leadership and creating thought leadership content.

• Experience in preparing organizational spokespersons for media appearances and significant press engagements.

• At least three (3) years of experience in directly supervising or managing staff, with a demonstrated capability to develop and support team members.

• Proficiency in Meltwater or similar media monitoring and analytics platforms is essential.

• Familiarity with the legal and civil rights landscape, with a comfort level in translating complex litigation and policy issues for wider audiences.

• A passion and dedication to leveraging government power to safeguard the civil rights and freedoms of marginalized communities.

• A strong commitment to the mission and core values of Public Rights Project, particularly regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
