This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Execute all responsibilities in alignment with States United’s principles of integrity, inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
• Act as the main communications representative for a designated group of key states and issues, tracking media narratives and developments while engaging the broader team as necessary.
• Collaborate internally with cross-departmental teams to create and implement proactive and rapid response communication strategies for States United and pro-democracy state officials concerning elections, voting, and democracy.
• Work closely with the press team to assist with media inquiries, assess opportunities, formulate response plans, and mitigate potential risks.
• Keep abreast of national and state developments to aid in the framing and creation of media initiatives.
• Provide support for rapid response communications for States United and help manage messaging and media scenarios affecting key stakeholders.
• Oversee and/or assist in managing relationships with communications consultants, including strategy development, tactics, and execution.
• Collaborate with senior members of the communication team to formulate and execute communication strategies focused on key priorities, research, and States United projects.
• Work closely with other members of the communication team to ensure States United maintains a cohesive and integrated communication approach.
• Perform additional communications tasks as required.
• A Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Affairs, or a related field is required.
• At least eight (8) years of relevant experience in communications, news media, and/or advocacy; including a minimum of two (2) years in a communication role within an agency, government office, or political campaigns.
• Proven experience with client and/or principal management.
• Comfortable managing and executing rapid response communication strategies.
• Demonstrated success in crafting messaging, developing communication plans, and shaping narratives in challenging communication environments at both local and national levels.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy—especially important during the drafting process involving multiple editors or stakeholders in a remote setting.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely on complex subjects.
• Capability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
• Excellent project management and problem-solving skills that facilitate juggling multiple tasks, optimizing resources, and managing timelines.
• Exhibit a positive demeanor, demonstrate concern for individuals and communities, and showcase self-confidence, common sense, and strong listening skills.
• Stay updated with the news cycle and have a fundamental understanding of the interplay between traditional media, new media, and social media.
• Willingness and capacity to work beyond standard hours, including weekends, and/or over 40 hours a week as required.
• Must be able to commit to a minimum of 15-20% travel time.
• Must be available to work Eastern (EST) or Central (CST) time zone hours.
