Senior Mainframe Development Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey.

📋 Description

• Lead the transformation of outdated mainframe applications (Assembler and COBOL) with an emphasis on enhancing developer experience (DX), automation, and the adoption of DevOps practices.

• Design and establish CI/CD pipelines tailored for mainframe workloads, seamlessly integrating legacy systems into contemporary DevOps and platform engineering methodologies.

• Facilitate AI-assisted development and modernization efforts, leveraging AI for code analysis, refactoring, documentation, test generation, and acceleration of the modernization process.

• Collaborate with platform, DevOps, and SRE teams to incorporate observability, reliability, and security into the updated mainframe applications.

• Document and systematize knowledge of legacy systems to enable AI-driven insights and ensure that this knowledge is available to the next generation of engineers.

• Act as a technical leader and proponent for contemporary engineering practices on the mainframe, mentoring teams and assisting in transitioning the culture towards automation-first and continuous delivery approaches.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in mainframe transactional, batch, and core processing systems.

• Proven track record in modernizing, refactoring, or converting legacy codebases into modern architectures or programming languages.

• At least 5 years of experience with modern software development methodologies, including version control, structured testing, and CI/CD pipelines.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience with contemporary programming languages (e.g., Java, Python), API-based architectures, cloud or hybrid environments, and enterprise integration patterns.

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent military experience.
