This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Design, develop, and manage new backend services and APIs from conception to deployment, including technical proposals, implementation, testing, and rollout to production.
• Contribute to frontend solutions that present the team’s services to users.
• Transform ambiguous or broadly-defined challenges into clear technical plans that the team can execute effectively.
• Create design and architectural documentation to facilitate alignment across engineering and product teams.
• Collaborate with internal platform teams, product managers, and organizational stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
• Prioritize stability, performance, and scalability in your designs and the guidance you offer to the team.
• Mentor and develop fellow engineers on the team through code reviews, pair programming, and technical leadership.
• Engage in an on-call rotation.
• Hands-on experience with the design and development of reliable, large-scale backend systems; most Senior Engineers at Fastly typically have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
• Strong expertise in at least one backend programming language, with a quick learning ability for new languages and frameworks.
• Experience in designing and developing new services or systems from the ground up (greenfield development).
• Proficiency with relational databases is required; experience with NoSQL databases is a significant advantage.
• Ability to write code that is efficient, maintainable, clear, and concise.
• Proven track record of taking ownership of projects (beyond individual tasks) and successfully driving them to completion.
• Experience in authoring technical proposals and design documents to align stakeholders and guide project implementation.
• Ability to work collaboratively across teams and functions to understand business needs and deliver corresponding software solutions.
• Experience in mentoring, guiding, and developing other engineers.
• Comfort in navigating ambiguity; capable of assessing feasibility, identifying constraints, and creating realistic plans even when problems are not fully defined.
