Senior Engineer – Data Engineering Lead

Posted Jul 28

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the evaluation of the database schema at the outset of the engagement. Map the entire legacy data model, pinpoint structural issues (such as circular references, denormalized tables, and missing constraints), and categorize tables according to their access patterns. This evaluation informs every subsequent phase.

• Collaborate with the Backend Lead and Principal Engineer to design a refined target schema. Establish naming conventions, tenancy patterns, and a partitioning strategy. This schema will be utilized by the client post-engagement.

• Develop and take ownership of the translation layer between the legacy schema and the new backend: creating PostgreSQL views and materialized views for read operations, along with write mapper modules for data writes. The new code will operate with clean data models while preserving the integrity of the old schema beneath. You will design, construct, benchmark against production-scale data, and maintain performance throughout the migration.

• Manage the data contract between the legacy and new systems. The Backend Lead will develop against the interfaces you provide, and you will be accountable for ensuring data consistency while both systems are operational.

• Strategize and implement the per-tenant data cutover from the legacy schema to the target schema, incorporating verification gates at each phase and maintaining rollback safety throughout the process.

• Oversee database performance tuning during the migration, including read replica strategies, capacity projections, and managing increased load during the dual-system operation.

• Implement data quality, lineage, and audit capabilities that are adequate for a healthcare environment.

• Provide mentorship to engineers on the team regarding data fundamentals.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of experience in data engineering, with strong proficiency in Python and SQL.

• Extensive PostgreSQL knowledge that goes beyond merely writing effective queries. You have experience building and maintaining views, materialized views, and complex schema migration strategies in production environments. Experience with Aurora PostgreSQL is highly preferred.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience with a significant migration or rebuild project where two systems operated concurrently, necessitating consistent data across both.

• Proficiency in designing schemas from degraded or legacy starting points, with insights on constructing translation layers that enable new code to function seamlessly while the old schema remains intact.

• Production experience with AWS, particularly with Aurora and associated data services.

• Must have delivered impactful work within the past 2 years.
