This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +2 more states.
• Select and advocate for each Book Club title, supporting choices that embody The Atlantic's intellectual rigor and editorial goals.
• Commission and edit essays, interviews, and contextual pieces related to Book Club selections.
• Compose a monthly or bimonthly editor's note or introduction for every selection.
• Lead live and virtual author discussions and reader events, including Q&As and moderated conversations.
• Develop and sustain a pipeline of book prospects aligned with publishing schedules.
• Cultivate trusted relationships with editors, agents, and publicists.
• Collaborate with Growth, Product, and Audience teams to enhance Book Club presentation, packaging, and promotion.
• Represent The Atlantic within the larger literary community at festivals, book fairs, and industry events.
• Contribute to The Atlantic's wider coverage of books and culture.
• A minimum of five years of experience in editing and writing.
• Strong familiarity with magazine writing and its unique characteristics.
• A well-formed perspective on fiction and nonfiction, with a readiness to advocate for it and openness to diverse opinions.
• A deep, informed curiosity about reader discussions and the ability to predict future topics of interest.
• A proven history of conceiving, developing, launching, and enhancing ambitious projects or products.
• Knowledge of the publishing landscape and an interest in literary and technological trends that impact reading.
• Exceptional editorial judgment.
• A passion for the written word and a well-developed, stylish writing voice.
• A desire and discernment to connect with individuals both in-person and online, representing The Atlantic across various platforms.
• Capability to choose accessible, substantial books deserving of serious attention.
• Interest in identifying established authors and emerging writers before they gain widespread recognition.
• Ability to thrive in the fast-paced environment of a real-time news organization while adhering to regular deadlines.
• Willingness to work during nights, early mornings, and weekends as needed.
• Completion of reference checks is mandatory.
