Senior Desktop Software Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Spearhead a complete overhaul of our desktop client, transitioning from platform-specific native code to a cohesive Rust-based architecture.

• Take charge of the entire desktop Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)—encompassing architecture, implementation, release engineering, and ongoing maintenance—equally prioritizing macOS, Linux, and Windows.

• Address genuinely challenging problems from start to finish: sync engine internals, deep integration with OS file systems, and a robust update/release infrastructure, all deemed equally essential.

• Design and manage a secure auto-updater: ensuring signed delivery, signature verification, staged rollouts, rollback capabilities, and dependable cross-platform update mechanics.

• Establish the quality standards for the new codebase from the ground up—defining test strategies, automated coverage, CI/CD, observability, and crash reporting—and hold the product accountable to these standards.

• Oversee platform-specific considerations including code signing, notarization, packaging, background services, and native shell/file-system integrations.

• Incorporate our existing end-to-end encryption layer into the client, guaranteeing that cryptographic operations are accurate, efficient, and securely implemented.

• Leverage AI-assisted and agentic development tools (such as Claude Code, Codex, and others) to enhance delivery speed, while helping to establish best practices for AI-augmented workflows within the team.

• Collaborate with product, security, and backend teams to deliver scalable features.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in desktop application development, with a proven history of shipping and maintaining production software across macOS, Linux, and Windows platforms.

• Strong expertise in Rust, including async patterns, Foreign Function Interface (FFI), and performance optimization.

• Practical experience with cross-platform desktop frameworks such as Tauri and/or Electron.

• Background in leading or anchoring a significant rewrite or greenfield project—you’ve made foundational architectural decisions and dealt with their implications.

• Direct experience in designing or operating auto-update systems, including secure distribution and code signing/notarization processes.

• Capability to define a testing and quality strategy from scratch, rather than simply adapting an existing framework.

• Familiarity with correctly integrating existing cryptographic libraries; practical knowledge of end-to-end encryption concepts (AES-GCM, key management, client-side encryption).

• Comfort and fluency with AI coding tools and agentic workflows—you actively engage with them and understand their advantages and limitations.

• Ownership mindset: you view the desktop product as your own and drive it from architecture through to delivered, supported software.
