Senior Database Consultant, PostgreSQL

📋 Description

• Offer extensive support for all aspects of database and application infrastructure to a varied clientele.

• Provide consulting and delivery of services, along with implementing enhancements and optimizations for customers using managed services.

• Coordinate, analyze, design, implement, and manage IT solutions, including the configuration and ongoing maintenance of database servers.

• Evaluate client infrastructure and processes, suggesting best practices to improve existing operational procedures.

• Manage backup processes and disaster recovery strategies.

• Supervise backup, clustering, mirroring, replication, failover, and restoration of damaged databases.

• Create and review action plans for maintenance, deployment, and upgrades.

• Develop, implement, and sustain complex data architectures (e.g., normalized and/or dimensional data models and DDL generation).

• Lead efforts in problem management by evaluating incidents for recurring trends.

• Participate in the team’s on-call rotation, typically once per month on a weekend.

• Establish, manage, and fulfill client commitments in collaboration with team members.

• Prepare client status and incident reports, regularly review client reports, and respond to client inquiries and requests.

• Engage in and occasionally lead initiatives to propose, recommend, and potentially design/implement new monitoring checks, enhancements to DBC toolkits, and other process improvements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient knowledge and experience in installing, configuring, and upgrading PostgreSQL databases and tools pertinent to PostgreSQL Administration.

• Experience in managing PostgreSQL within virtualized and cloud environments, particularly AWS, GCP, or Azure.

• Familiarity with scripting (bash/python) and software development (C++, Java, Go).

• Experience with automation technologies such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Chef, and SALT.

• Strong debugging skills and a methodical troubleshooting approach, with the ability to identify and apply solutions for known issues, and the creativity to resolve complex challenges when necessary.

• Excellent documentation abilities.

• Desirable qualifications include an understanding of current IT service standards like ITIL.

• Active participation in projects related to PostgreSQL or other database or infrastructure software is a plus.

• Practical experience in monitoring PostgreSQL databases using industry-standard tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds, pgAdmin, Zabbix, Nagios, and Datadog.

• Familiarity with cloud-native and managed database monitoring tools, including AWS CloudWatch, Google Cloud Operations (Stackdriver), and Azure Monitor.

• Experience in setting up, configuring, and managing PostgreSQL on Kubernetes is a nice-to-have.

• Knowledge of monitoring and observability solutions using Prometheus and Grafana is a plus.

• Required experience with High Availability (HA) solutions for PostgreSQL, including Patroni and repmgr.

• Required experience with PostgreSQL backup tools, such as Barman, pgBackRest, pg_basebackup, etc.

• Experience in database migrations from various database engines, including Oracle, MySQL, and MSSQL, to PostgreSQL.

• Experience in analyzing and optimizing schema conversions, SQL compatibility issues, and performance tuning post-migration.

• Experience with Debezium and Striim is beneficial but not mandatory.
