Senior Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Greece.

📋 Description

• Design and construct production data pipelines and data platforms that support models, data, and AI workflows for both internal and client-facing applications, taking responsibility for their performance under live traffic.

• Manage non-functional quality aspects – including latency and throughput budgets, scalability, reliability, observability, and cost – for the systems within your area of expertise.

• Direct the design and management of multi-model data stores – such as relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector), and graph databases (Neo4j, Neptune) – ensuring the appropriate tool is utilized for each access pattern.

• Establish technical direction: create design documents, make build-versus-buy decisions, and substantiate your approach with evidence.

• Engage across the technology stack when necessary – including services, data access, infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD – and troubleshoot issues as they arise in production.

• Mentor and define quality standards for mid-level and junior data engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including shipping and managing production systems.

• Profound, demonstrable expertise in designing and constructing distributed data pipelines using Apache Spark.

• Strong capabilities in data modeling across relational, vector, and graph databases.

• Proficient in at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python, Scala, or Java).

• Practical experience with cloud platforms (GCP/AWS), containers (Docker), CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).

• Strong software engineering practices – including version control, testing, code reviews, and CI/CD.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity effectively.

• Excellent communication skills – capable of writing a one-page design document that is beneficial for both product managers and staff engineers.

• Experience in building and operating ML/LLM-powered production systems (model serving, RAG, agents) at scale is a plus.

• Familiarity with event-driven or streaming architectures (e.g., Pub/Sub, Kafka) and real-time systems is advantageous.

• In-depth knowledge of security, IAM, networking, and data governance in cloud environments is a plus.

• Background in marketing technology, ad tech, or large-scale data products is a plus.

• Significant contributions to open-source projects or a proven history of technical leadership is a plus.
