Senior Consultant, Data Science and Analytics

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Costa Rica.

đź“‹ Description

• You will lead the continuous development and enhancement of TransUnion’s proprietary Insurance Analytics platform (InsureR), utilizing advanced skills in machine learning, mathematical programming, and software development to deliver scalable, high-quality solutions.

• You will improve the usability and effectiveness of analytic tools by contributing to UI/UX enhancements that facilitate better user experiences and increase adoption.

• You will provide local support, collaborating with teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues within regional analytic environments, ensuring continuity and optimal performance.

• You will play a vital role in supporting the global Data Science and Analytics (DSA) and Insurance Analytics teams, enhancing essential capabilities that drive enterprise-wide analytics solutions.

• Lead the creation of analytic solutions using programming languages such as C++, R, Python, SQL, Hive, and Spark, formalizing some initiatives into repeatable process improvements.

• Assist Global Technology in maintaining the tools and frameworks utilized by analysts on the high-performance computing (HPC) cluster and serve as a lead representative of the Data Science Development team in projects led by Global Technology, acting as a subject matter expert on machine learning and scientific computing.

• Assume data science consulting responsibilities across various regions, working to identify strategies and opportunities for testing and adopting TransUnion’s analytic products and services.

• Contribute to research and innovation initiatives in partnership with other DSA colleagues and may lead small analytic research teams or manage research interns on a project basis, as needed.

• You will engage in mentoring and training junior team members, fostering a high-performance culture and cultivating an environment that promotes excellence and reflects the TransUnion brand.


⛳️ Requirements

• Master’s degree in statistics, economics, applied mathematics, financial mathematics, computer science, engineering, operations research, or another highly quantitative field with a minimum of 3 years of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline with at least five (5) years of relevant professional experience.

• Experienced data scientist with a robust mathematical programming and theoretical background, coupled with advanced software development skills to support the creation of state-of-the-art in-house analytic platforms.

• Advanced C++ programming capabilities, ideally in scientific computing applications.

• Experience in designing and implementing advanced numerical algorithms.

• Familiarity with integrating popular machine learning frameworks (such as XGBoost, LightGBM, H2O).

• Proficient in statistical languages like R or machine learning packages for Python; experience with other programming languages (Scala, Java) and HPC environments (Slurm, Univa, SGE, Torque).

• Advanced SQL programming skills and experience with big data platforms (Hadoop, Spark, Hive); knowledge of Apache Arrow is advantageous.

• Experience in engineering connections between big data frameworks and frontend applications (Shiny, Streamlit, Dash, Tableau).

• Demonstrated strong analytical, critical, and creative thinking abilities, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

• Proven interest and established career path in industries served by TransUnion, such as financial services, insurance, fraud, and digital marketing.

• Strong project and time management skills to oversee multiple complex projects simultaneously with minimal supervision in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. This may involve managing multiple resources within a project and effectively coordinating tasks across resources using clear workflows.

• Excellent business acumen and versatile interpersonal skills to communicate effectively at various levels within a complex and dynamic matrix organization.

• Proficient verbal and written communication skills in both Spanish and English.

• Proven ability to translate technical concepts into clear actionable recommendations suitable for influencing business partners and decision-makers both internally and externally toward desired outcomes.

• Willingness to travel 10-20% of the time.
